WHAT IS INTAGLIO (GLYPTIC) ART? Reverse intaglio is a rare and intricate engraving technique in which a design is carved in relief on the back of a transparent gemstone to create a three-dimensional effect that appears to float within the stone. Ancient intaglios originated in Mesopotamia around 3000 BCE and later spread to Egypt, Greece, and Rome, while reverse intaglio was popularized in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
